I changed the oil myself at 2500kms and im about to do it again in the next few days as its up to 8000kms and maybe spark plugs too (should have done it at 7500kms). I got my oil and filter from the dealer spare parts cost me $80~. I wanted to stick with the same oil VW service use and I didnt want to use aftermarket oil filter and risk having problems with warranty.

Definitely use original VW parts - technically you can use anything which meets the manufacturers specs but putting non-VW parts under warranty IMO is asking for trouble....

Although I would question why you need to change spark plugs at 7500km? That seems a little bit excessive.

I use Mobil 1 0w-40. The dealer charges the same amount for 5w-30 castrol which is a good oil but have always had a preference for the mobil stuff You can also supply your own oil at dealer services.

I guess its just habit from owning Rotary engined cars that were fussy with ignition. Plugs would foul up very easy and needed changing often.

Plugs in piston cars do last longer but they still build up carbon on them and some cars do so more than others. I dont know how the GTI is on plugs but I may check it out. Sparkplugs are not very expensive, and they are not difficult to do on a inline 4 cyl car with top mounted plugs.

Urs sparkies should be fine for at least 30-40 kms under normal condition (all that EGR crap around the engine that vw put there serve a purpose, that is to make ur car run cleaner and more efficient and longer... check my sparks at 20kms and they look brand new.
