Personally, I didn't find the XR4 to be anything special to test drive. I did however have my GF and the dealer rep in the car, so weight wasn't as good as going solo.
When I first test drove the Polo GTI, I was thrilled by the turbo power and didn't think twice about the XR4.
If you want power, a Chipped GTI has a good portion of grunt.
If you want handling, the XR4 is very well designed and handles better.
Whats your budget? For 25K you can get a GTI, chip it, lower it and put some sways / bracing bars on it, which would be a good overall result.
For the same dollars, you could get an XR4, and get about 20kw more than factory out of it. From the little I've read, the XR4 won't do much more than 20kw above the stock power without some serious work.
So in summary, do you like speed-stripes or turbos? Drive both and let us know what you think...
