Just that initial 'tappety' noise. Thats the best way I can describe it...

Sure you aren't getting confused with the automatic clutch function when the car runs for the first minute or so? Takes the idle up to over 1000 RPMs so its always going to sound a little noisy. What you've got is probably sticky lifters. A bit of "lifter free" will get rid of that.

    Noisey cold start

Always a little noisier when starting from cold, the air pump is running to pump air into the exhaust to get the cat up to temperature. Emission control guys. If it sounds tappety it's something else.

Used it in my T4 Transporter, no problems, @ 147K motor still sounded new.

I'm using Nulon oil in the Polo.

Probably better said as "idle up". You know when cars once had a manual "clutch" that you pulled out to help start the car better? Maybe not. Same thing except nowadays is electronic. Comes in when you start the car and idles the car up whilst everything warms up. After a minute or so it backs off and the engine is heaps quieter.

On Carbied cars this was the Choke...No clutch involved here. The ECU controls a similar function on EFI cars these days for cold start, but no clutches were every involved here.

Sorry, yes the choke. I have no idea why I said clutch. But yeah the electronic idle up is noisy as hell.
