"Easy Entry" backrest

The brochure says the GTI has "easy entry", and the manual says that this should allow the seat to slide forward when I pull the handle, except, I can't seem to do this. I can only tilt it. Is there a special method of doing it?

tilt the backrest of the seat all the way foward. Whilst pushing down on the back of the seat, push it foward.

only works on the passenger seat as far as I remember

Not 100% sure but on the drivers side the steering wheel is in the way it will move forward only slightly.
