A dull question about the fan

Right. The air cons not on and the fan is on zero. But everytime I stop at the same lights after travelling slowly up Military road and then come onto the freeway at speed the fan goes warm and the car almost smells a bit like burning...

I've checked the engine temp and its exactly in the middle each time so that ain't it......Is this normal ? It fades after about 3Kms

Sorry for what could be a really daft question

Try pressing the button next the the A/C button so it doesn't let outside air in.

Yes - even though I've driven up and over Ayres Rock in 60 degree heat and then driven the Antartic Ice Shelf with baby seals for snow chains I've often wondered why the water temp never ever moves from a stoic 90 degrees.....

Okay after driving on the highway most of my cars life so far here is the answer:

    1. Just because the fan isn't going doesn't mean the car isn't pumping hot water through the heater core

    2. Once you go above ~60km/h the air pressure coming in the front of the car pushes through the aircon system with the fan on "0". At 100 there is a fair bit of flow.

    3. Burning, you sit still with no air flow over the heater core in traffic. The aircon system is still heating the heater core. It gets very hot because you're car is trying to heat the cabin with no airflow.

    4. You drive off onto the freeway, you get airflow over your VERY hot heater core = heat plus dust/pollen = slight burny smell?

That is what I have found driving 66km to work on the freeway each day.

What's your temperature on? Maybe try turning it to the minimum? i.e. below 18.
