iPhone 3GS (and all other iPhone models) uses a standard iPod connector (they are all the same) so yes, it will work.
& by work, I mean with at least the minimum functionality that other iPods currently work.
I've never owned an Apple product before, but since my current mobile is on the way out, the new iPhone3GS is looking like the one, since it 'might' work via the ipod connection.
& just to be sure I haven't missed anything, it is an iPod-only connection right? It's not like i'll be able to connect other phones with music players into that port?

Chances are, it'll work with basic functions but most probably won't charge it though. It doesn't charge my 2nd generation itouch but works with it.

Mine works well with iphone 3g, and also charging if you buy the adaptor like you mentioned. I bought mine from cablejive, and the charging works well.
I still like using my ipod classic (1st gen) to get DJing done though... but yes iphone should work fine.
