Differential ring gear identification: 113mm or 114mm?

In deference to keeping VWindahouse's Little Red Devil thread on track, here is a place to try and garner information about our differentials in order to know what LSD or TBD variant is needed.

Here's Jmac's insight into the situation (along with some info I found)

They probably use the same parts system as me seeing as independents dont get vin active Etka anymore after VW shut us down. i subscribe to Germany now ftw. Anyway where im heading is the 02R in the Polo has 02j bellhousing and 02r outer gear casing. Ik try not to muddle things up here as im thinking as i type. If they request the vin something must tell them what diam ring gear you have if it were a Golf, ive looked and cant see it but there isnt a magic program so after seeing so many they must ave something that tells them. So that being the case and if they do in fact use a similar program as i use then whats to stop them checking the Polo? its all vin active. I have a shredded peloquin that i could measure, there is only 3 gearbox codes for the 02R in the Gti , HWY, JDB and GVZ. Ill check what the casing is i have to see if it sheds light, not sure if it will but i would be trying the above with Peloquin, even if you are going Wavetrac. i reckon im going Wavetrac in my 6N, seems the go.
Cheers and sorry for the ramble

This differential will be used in the 02S SEAT LEON and 02R Polo from this production date 01 10 03 this
date along with letters is found on top of trans. near shift cable connects to trans.
Plus will fit in the 2005 up 0A4 transaxle.
But it's all rather confusing when you read some of the preceding text which states
    Some times
the Vin number won't work or trans. code number as VW has yet come up with a
way to tell the public which ring gear they have.

Would your comments also apply to my TDi, Jimmy?

Kaanage can you give me your vin too mate, i have a busted 02R with a wrecked peloquin so ill measure it and see what the casing code is to see if the light bulb comes on.

I'll be trying to find my transmission number as well as the VIN tomorrow so I can send it to Jimmy
I really would love to get a TBD as my PoD needs all the help it can get to put what power it has to the ground when at the track

If you can get your VIN number to Jimmy mate that would be a big help. What year was your Polo manufactured out of interest?

Ok guys ive measured the one i have here, its 113mm ID and the Gearbox is HWY. Ill check the OEM diff number now and then see what if any difference with another of the 2 codes we have. Now this is all good and well but the only thing bothering me now is the fact that you cant get a ring gear seperate from VW, meaning if you had a faulty diff or chipped tooth etc they could supply the 114 or 113 really as it all comes as one unit, make sense. Im hoping im worng and there is a sequence to what they fit to what. Best to see what other gearbox codes have to see if thats conclusive.
ps cheers for starting the thread

I reckon the transmission code wouldn't hurt either - you may need all the info we can give you, Jimmy.

I don't know if VW have any of the 114mm diffs left, though, if you had to order a new one, since they changed the design to allow more room for stronger rivets in the later diffs. The confusing changeover may be due to VW starting to produce the newer diff with the smaller ring gear while still having stocks of the older diffs at the various plants that assembled cars with 02J tranmissions.

With what i have guys i see like this, i have a HWY gearbox with a 113mm ring gear, ive checked this and used Anthonys vin as an example as hius box is HWY too. The OEM part number is 02J409021BE and can be supplied for any of the 3 codes im afraid so if its true that there is 2 being 113 and 114mm it means they could fit anything as they come complete diff with ring gear all riveted. Seeing as its an 02J Diff ive checked all that had 62/17 teeth ring gears and it seems post 06 only had 113mm. Seeing as this is a drama has anyone actually came across a 114mm in a 02R, really keen to hear as that would cement my thoughts for sure, if yes then we are right back to the beginning with the only way of knowing being a strip done and measure. You could be right about different plants etc thats maybe why we see it, in that case if it is then we are stuffed.

Hey mate, I don't suppose you know the month in 06 the 113mm started coming out? I remember Guy had an earlier model than mine and he had to do some machining when we put his peloquin in. Not sure if that's relevant?

Was that Eddy's little blue girl? I know he had a Peloquin in it before the SQS Salisbury LSD.

In another thread about a Peloquin, someone mentioned machining the ring gear after unrivetting it so that the mating surface was dead flat because the Peloquin, Wavetrac and Quaife are made of much stronger steel than the original. This means they won't deform to mate to the ring gear the way that the original can (talking about tiny amounts here but the resulting gap can cause the bolts to suffer more shock loading => failure and destroyed diff & housing).
It may well have been Jimmy who mentioned this.
