Glad I found this thread. My cup holder won't open. Ben, if you're reading this, I remember just touching yours and 'voila!', it opened. Mine seems stuck. Manual says theres this white button, for the life of me, I can't even see it!

i think that "white" button is the one located on the end of that rail which the cupholder slides on

it's tricky- the outer flaps go on the inside, and the inner flaps go outside of the outer flaps.

just as long as when you're closing it, you ensure that you push the outer flaps toward the inner flaps and get both outer flaps on the inside of the inner flaps/ conversely, when the outer flaps approach the inner flaps, get the inner flaps to go on the outside of the outer flaps which go in between the inner flaps, then you'll be right.

get a small flat head screwdriver and put it on the right hand side of the black part of the cupholder inside the dash and push the handle towards the cd player... should sorta pop out..?

take it to a dealer. mine broke early on, they access it after removing the glove box i think.

    Since then, all good.

Hahah mine broke on the first day

The service manager told me to always push it from where the lines are at the bottom, that way it doesn't flex as much and is less likely to jam.

Well, mine didn't work from day one. It was stuck, so I'll be heading to the dealer this weekend!

    Cupholder

You cannot access the cupholder from the glovebox (ive replaced the entire center dash piece on my gti)

like i said (albeit it was a little vague)

    Open the cupholder.

Recessed into the silver dash piece there is a sort of black, backing plate that surrounds where the cupholder retracts into.

You goto the right hand vertical side (the side nearest to the cd player)

Insert a thin, flat screwdriver between the black piece and the silver surround,

you then proceed to gently 'persuade' the cupholder out from the silver piece by pushing your screwdriver handle in the direction of the dashboard itself.

The entire cupholder guts and all should just pop out.

You cant access it from behind, coz there's a torx screw holding the dash in behind it.. Further the cupholder is held in by clips around this black recessed plate, nothing more, and no pushing from behind will ease it out (tried that one myself, via the 2din cd player hole)

Hope i've been of some assistance
