    It's operator error-I've run 14.4 for 400metres,so I can't be changing gear too slowly......and I've never had a problem.

    Mate im sorry to jump on my high horse, but you have no idea how i drive and change gears so how about you keep your assumptions to yourself please. And if my gearbox is having problems because of the way i drive do you really think VW would have gone to so much trouble to get a new one put it. (btw it goes in friday week.)

    The gearbox is based on the old 1.8 Turbo boxes used in Golf's for years - so I don't think its a problem related to the gearbox in general I think Shane is just unlucky.

    Yes guy i think i am unlucky, you cant expect with the amount of cars that car companies put out, that every single one will be perfect.

    I wasn't commenting on your driving,I said there was nothing wrong with the basic gearbox,and that means the bulk of the 'problems' others are suffering are operator error.I don't doubt that you have a faulty gearbox.The point is that my car and Guy's are fairly modified,and used accordingly,with no problems.If there was a basic fault it would show up in our cars.

    Mine use to crunch really bad before I had all the linkages repaired after it shat itself and went for a ride on a tow truck. It still does on the odd occasion. I totally agree with Shaneth; I drive my polo just like any other manual car, yet it is the only car which has these problems.

    Cars that don't have a problem;
    Mazda 121
    BMW 318iS
    BMW 325i Convertible
    Falcon XR6
    Mazda3 MPS
    VW MkV Golf

    Cars that do;
    VW Polo GTI

    I'm going to be talking to VW on the 20th when the car goes in for a service regarding this problem to talk about solutions. I refuse to believe that jumping into a Polo GTI makes me a bad driver. If it was a driver problem all the other cars listed above would do it too.

    my mk4 gti has the crunch problem,and so did my brand new mk3 vr6 which VW changed the box.common knowledge that the vw 5 sp has a inherent problem.some are more unlucky than others,crunchyness is at varying levels.
