Cheers. I tracked it down to this one: Penrite Oil - A Better Class Of Oil for anyone that finds this thread in the future. Rated at G12+, available at Repco and Super Cheap Auto, amongst others.
There is a penrite that is compliant. About $50 for 5L premix or mixed.

Good man, hard to provide much info from a mobile whilst eating a kebab
New timing belt/water pump going in next week with all new coolant obviously. I'd sourced penrite 5 year G12+ (pink) but since then I've seen posts that say it must be G12++ and others that say G12++ is overkill for our climate. Was looking to save a few bucks over the VW genuine stuff but won't if its going to be a mistake. So what actually does each + mean, and is G12+ going to be suitable for my car?

I use the Penrite, its $50 for 5L of concentrate or mixed, just do it IMO...
Performance Tunes from $850Wrecking RS OCTAVIA 2 Link
You can get both.
10L of concentrate is about $90 trade price.
5L of premix is about $40 retail.

'01 Beetle 2.0
The seller on eBay sold both for the same price...
but even though its only G12+, its still ok for the car??
Just found that the car needs G12+. I'd been told I needed G12++ or G13 by a local euro independent specialist which is why I was a bit dubious about the Penrite but you guys were spot on - I'll run with the Penrite 5 year.
thanks
