Headlight switch, brown and green(?) wire. Google vw headlight switch removal. It's a surprise if you haven't done it before. Cig lighter and stereo feeds are always on.

cool thanks for that. Might have a look into the headlight switch for it as while I'm in there I might steal the illumination 12v for my boost gauge.

Managed to remove the headlight switch (is different between the golf and polo). Could find switched accessories 12v easy enough (and 3 illumination pins either of which I can pick off for the boost gauge) but not an ignition switch fully on/engine running 12v. I'll have to hunt through the fuse panel but nothing is listed on the fuse lists. we'll see. anyone hot wired one of these before and know from memory what colour wire is the key ignition?

From my alarm days, a solid black wire off the ign switch was the permanent live. IIRC

If you have a multi meter test out the slots in the fuse box that dont have a fuse in them VW's have a fuse box that has power to nearly all the sockets and only use what the car needs. Both my cars have spares and I have used an always on and an ACC feed in the Passat and an ACC feed in the polo. Put the probe in and when you get one turn the key off If its ACC the power will go off.
Then buy one of these at Jaycar and stick it in with the wire at the bottom and it will act as a fuse normally.

They come in standard fuse and Mini fuse sizes
