Coil pack / Spark plug

Guys, looking to change plugs and maybe give the GTI a bit of a birthday and renew the coil packs.

Whats the best option for a K04'd daily driver, which gets its arse kicked most days?

I know some of you lot have updated the coils to updated/different styles, but that's about where i get lost.

Car missed a beat at full load this morning so thought it might be a good time!

I have std coilpacks, unknown age. Running NGK BPR7Es gapped at 28thou.

I replace the plugs if I get a miss.

My take on coilpacks is that there's nothing wrong with the std ones, if you need red, fill your boots but don't expect 30hp.

I'd change the plugs and see if the miss is gone before throwing hard earned money on coilpacks.

Coilpacks are a hundred each more or less - an expensive fluff up. Like Gav said the plugs are cheaper option and most likely the culprit.

I've not seen gains from Coilpacks for the Polo. Seems to be that spark plugs don't make a huge difference (as in if they work, more expensive ones don't do anything differently).

I've tried small and wide gaps, no noticeable change (so back to mid-range).

Scanned it this evening, came up with 16517 - oxygen sensor B1 S1 Response too slow
P0133 - 35 - 10 - Intermittent.
Readiness 0000 0001

What does this all mean exactly, other than one of the O2 sensors (which one haha) is shagged?

Its the pre cat one. I had this code on mine a while back. New fixed it.

If you've got a lazy 2 wire O2 sensor then sometimes they can be brought back to life with a blowtorch. Possibly not a permanent fix but if money is tight & you can DIY...

I had the post cat sensor (B1 S2) die on the red car. I had Jimmy source and change it over for me. When I spoke with VW, they quoted $288.78 for the pre-cat sensor, so B1 S1 (part # 1K0998262D) and the post cat $311.60 (1K0998262Q). It was much much cheaper sourcing through Jimmy, $160-$180 from recollection.

I didn't notice any miss when the light came on, it made no noticeable difference to the way the car drove. It usually came on once the car was up to temp, i.e. within 10mins of starting from a cold engine. So the miss you experienced may have nothing to do with the sensor.

These are 4 wire sensors BTW..

It stutters when idling at the lights, too sometimes. Very odd. I'll check whatever PCV lines I can see at the same time.

Hopefully change the 02 sensor and whack in a set of plugs this weekend if I get a chance.
