Thanks fellas - much appreciated as always!

    Yeah - I don't think it's the clutch either.

Jimmy - it's with the highly competent folks at Austral who are going to pull it all apart even after driving it (maybe or maybe not - they said they did) which should have made them think - hmmmmm, the clutch actually seems OK, maybe it's something else. So I might suggest they look at what you suggest first.

Austral just confirmed that the clutch is a warrantable item. Still don't really know what exactly is wrong he mumbled somethig about the paddles.

Don't really care - as long as i don't have to pay for it

I suggest not the dual mass flywheel. Problem presented is a pressure problem. I would say a cracked release arm Sometimes it causes the clutch slave rod to pop out and hit the pressure plate, could also be a pressure plate fault, but certainly didnt sound like the clutch Peter.

    hey folks.

Currently looking at the Polo GTI and have been reading the forums a fair bit. Is it just me or does the clutch on this thing appear to be rubbish?

I seem to read the most common problem in here is clutch noises/feeling clunky.

Don't want my first VW to be a lemon!

I agree - that sounds like the sounds I heard - banging and metal on metal on metal sometimes REALLY bad other times not too bad at all. i drove it from town to Norman Park (via the pub to watch a bit of the G.P ) The pulsing and vibrating suggested something banging against something spinning around, but when the clutch was engaged it would accelerate fine.

Reckon the dealer is replacing everything to hit VW for a BIG warranty bill?

I will be interested to see the full paperwork on Fri as to what they replaced/fixed

Mate, the clutch problems you hear of here are nothing compared to what I have experienced in an XR6 Falcon. People are upgrading because if you throw more power through it can wear it out quicker and also to get better feel when they are driving. Second and Third gear syncros are more of an issue, but remember this forum is 100% people who are very sensitive about their cars, its a passion for everyone.

Lets be clear on this - my clutch (or something associated with it) was not just a bit noisy.
Sounded and felt like the whole drivetrain was going to fall out of it. But then 20 secs later it felt/sounded like it was just really, badly damaged.

    I was not being precious.

I've done 45,000kms, standard donk and not really driven hard - certainly never full on dragged or raced.

Most people would have pulled over immediately and had it towed home but I really wanted to drive the 15kms home (via the pub's big screen) to try and make it back to watch the GP.

Yes - quite a few Polo GTI's have problems with the drivetrain - no secret there.
