I was lucky enough to thrash the new S3 at mooney mooney a month ago, it handles really well, but i reckon it needs more power, i was chasing a S4 and i get close to it at the corner, but the gap stretch when it comes to the straight...
Managed to reach close to the end of 4th gear on some straight (about 180km/h i guess, really no chance to look down)
The bucket seat is awesome...
And hell, top quality interior..
Only problem is i cant afford one...
It is 75k drive away...

"VW GTI" QLD Prestige Plate
cheers mate, thats what we were after. someone who has owned both an evo and a polo GTI and given them a good working. as i said before, i completely agree that we are no match on a track but from what i have seen so far 'on paper', it seemed as though our chipped Polo GTI was a real straight line competitor.
*i thought the new GTR was supposed to bust the $100K mark....are they really that much cheaper in japan. and hey, no LCT's there.

in response to the original question. in a word. no. although i have no interest in evos what so ever, or rexies, i'd have no hesitation in backing it around a race track every time. i think even a 200kw polo would struggle. having said that, i'd honestly prefer a chipped polo. the whole 200kw 4 cylinder all wheel drive catagory is a scaled down race car. the polo is not.
87' MK2 GTI
13' MK7 TDI
i have no doubt that a chipped polo could keep up with an evo, but i find it hard to believe it could beat it. but the car is only as fast as the driver.
a while back i used to own a little toyota gt starlet, a 1.3l that used to make 220hp atw. it ran consistant 12.9s on street tyres down the 1/4 but on the street i couldnt keep up with my mate who had a evo1 that ran low 13s. thats the advantage of 4wd, doesnt matter where you are you know what it can do.
as for the gtr in aus looks like we are gonna get ripeed. over in jap and america is so cheap. cant see how they can justify selling them so for so much more over here.
maybe the market here for them is so petty that they crank the prices up to make the costings worthwhile. the only people driving the R34 GTR here on the Gold Coast are the cashed up Arabs that spend an absolute sh*tload on the cars and stall them at every set of lights. theres an arab bloke in a TT Supra getting around with 'DRAGER' on the plates. a few years ago me and my mate hit him up for a race in a Familia GTX and he said (no joke), "NO WAY, I DON'T DRAG". we cracked up laughing and drove off while the guy bunny hopped down the road trying to get the thing going - damn those big turbo's and heavy duty clutches.
i imagine the cashed up yanks and japs would be all over the new GTR though.

I think the EVO X 80-120km/ph time in 3rd gear was 3.7sec.
