    Changing Sump?

    Hi Guys,

I'm planning on having a bash at changing my sump at the weekend, going to fit a forge baffled sump, and was wondering whether anyone on here has done this before and are there any specific things I should look out for or be wary of/any general advice?

I have done a few sump replacement/removals in recent times. No big deal.

The bolts are 10mm heads or 5 mm allen keys.

Drain the oil out and I would say if you can, leave the car to stand overnight, so that you don't get dripped on the whole time the sump is off.

There's 2 or 3 bolts from the gearbox into the sump, 16mm IIRC. The only hard part is the 2 bolts that are hidden slightly by the edge of the gearbox. A couple of choices, 1/4 drive socket set, 3/8 drive with a wobble extension or maybe a long ball ended allen key set.

Once you have removed all the bolts the sump may need a thump to remove it.

The bottom of the block will need a really good clean with something, to get the oil off and also the sealer, the factory use.

You will need to seal the new sump on and there's a proper VW sealer for that but you can use something high temp silicon based as an alternative. It just needs the tiniest bead. Any more will squeeze into the engine and could (in an extreme case) get sucked into the oil pump pick up.

While I mention the oil pump, have a good look up the pick up and make sure that's clear of crap.

    Thanks for the reply Gavin,

Ok so the bolts on the gearbox are still accessible then? For cleaning the block is there anything in particular you would recommend? Will I need gasket scrapers or will good old blue roll and elbow grease do the job?

I presume VW parts should sell the sealer then? I'll make sure I check the pick up then

    Thanks

Sorry Josh, not really good at checking back.

VW sell the sealant if you haven't bought already but Halfords or any motor factors, even B and Q would have something you could use.

Blue roll would get most off, some brake cleaner to degrease the block and sump would be ok.

Those bolts can be got to. Google sump change on any 1.8T and you'd get pictures.

    Cheers

    Thanks Gavin,

Gave this a crack at the weekend and seemed to go pretty well! (touch wood lol) I just picked up some high temp sealant from my local motor factors & they recommended using brake/clutch cleaner with blue roll which worked a treat!

Those 2 bolts were a little tricky but with persistence and a reasonably skinny socket set they can be got at. Can't say it's a job I'd want to do every weekend though haha.

She's all ready for the track this weekend now
