on very good authority i here a 3' downpipe makes the car sound like a tractor and theres no performance gain unless your going a big turbo conversion. the engine note is noticably deeper without being offensive.
With a custom 2.5" downpipe, the sound is deeper (very noticeable at idle and lower revs) with a stronger burble when backing off at low revs. The cost was much less than $400 from recommended shop.
I don't know my specific power gains, but expect somewhere in the 5-10kw more.
I think the 3" would probably sound deeper and amplify the changes, but as the flow between the 2 1/4 inch and 2 1/2 inch is greatly improved and is adequate for upto 200kw (from a hodge podge of reading) and there was some concern about loosing Torque with the 3", didn't feel the need to go bigger.

Ok!.
skipped the ebay seller, and went to an Australia Reseller that had a special deal another forum.
First impression. The SSQV sounds mad above 3000-4000rpm, but generally it's LOUD!
Installation was a breeze. Just a note for future do-ers. Don't bother going to Repco, or Autobarn to get the equipments or supplies. Go to bunnings as they have all the two things I needed for this install.
The Circular-clamp was in the bunnings clamps ale. And the other is a 25mm plug for the reccirculate pipe, which you can find in the irragation section. Plug and play.
The only thing I cut was the 4mm pipe for the maniford line, because i couldn't get the small clip off. The other two for the 25mm piping you can use a clamp and open it up and re-use them again.
Total cost for equipments = 18 dollar.
Now to the technical side of things.
I notice the MAF sensor is on the downwind side of the Reccirculate inlet pipe. If the sensor is measuring the air from the intake pipe, does that just senses the amount of air in that pipe now, and adjust the fuel accordingly? So, in effect the car shouldn't be running rich as I have read?
I reckon it too quiet...
Not as loud as on a jap car...
I installed the HKS SSQV tonight (thanks Adam).
Sounds good, but I took it around the block just now and I am getting bad lag after gear changes. I am assuming I haven't tightened one of the pipes enough?? Can't look now as its dark but I'll check it out tomorrow.
I used a small cable tie to tighten the 4mm pipe for the maniford line, maybe I need something tighter? (the stock clip was really tight). I just used the stock clamps to seal the other two so it shouldn't be those...
just wondering, will blocking off the recirculating pipe with a 25mm plug throw the car into limp mode?
has anyone changed their forge splitter/BOV to 100% atmosphere on the polo?
Mine have no problem at all, i blocked mine, no leaks no lag...
Make sure you got the real HKS....
There are a lot of replica out on the market...
