    Boost leak/power loss

    Hey guys,

Long time since my last post, but need to ask a few questions prior to my service next week.

Firstly, over the past fortnight there have been some strange noises coming from the engine. One sounded like I blew a tyre (but no puncture), the other a very high pitched squeal 3-4 times. I have read around the forums to find other cases but very little. Could this be a boost leak?

Secondly, I have a nice little uphill drag I drive sometimes and have found that changing from 1st to 2nd to 3rd the car pulls all the way to 5000/5500rpm no problem, but when I change into fourth there is a flat spot/loss of power. Might this be related to question number 1.

    Cheers.

    PAPA,
your bang from the engine could be the engine hitting the fire wall from a hard gear change/acceleration? Something a few people have commented on here. (Id be inclined to be worried about any banging from the engine though...?)

Boost leak would not likely be audible, if the noise you hear is only when on boost, it could be.

What are you doing when the noises occur?

No banging of engine against firewall or clunking, and changes are never fast. The sound was like over inflating a bicycle tube until it burst (bang-whoosh). The squeal has occurred both on upshifts (hard acceleration) and last night changing down to second.

I'd be nursing it to a VW dealership if your under warranty and asking for a check/fix...?
Is the squeal the sort of thing you get with a slipping belt? Could you have snapped (bang)/stretched a belt, resulting in the squealing as the belt might not have disintegrated?

Have visually checked everything in engine bay, and no damaged belts etc. Squeal is high pitched like air escaping tiny hole. Anyhow, car seems to be driving fine other than that slight loss of power in fourth. Will get back to you guys after service with anything that may have been diagnosed.
