Welcome back to the Colonies. Glad to hear you had a good time, shame you missed out on visiting the factory...
So when does your container of Citi interiors arrive?
hey guys and few girls,
i have returned from my 3 week South African adventure and am currently sitting in the Qantas Club at the Sydney airport waiting for my 7:00pm Coolangatta transfer to come.....so what better thing to do but jump onto ol' faithful VWWa.
i was absolutely stunned at the enormous amount of VW's driving around the streets of both Africa and South Africa . the car of choice clearly appeared to be the VW Citi Golf (available in the TenaCITI, CITI chico, VeloCITI and various others - pictured below). as you can see they are based on the golf mk1/mk2 (mk2 front, mk1 rear) but are actually a brand new car and are still being built and sold. i peered through the window at a few and all the interior was brand new.

i only saw a few Polo GTI's but a hell of a lot of Polo's, including several 2.0L petrol versions and the Polo Classic sedan which we dont sell here (would look awesome as a GTI model with a good set of springs and some nice wheels) .

as for the golf GTI's, i saw a hell of a lot and did not see 1 with the standard factory rims, they had all been upgraded to larger GTI replica's (the machined alloy ones).
as my 3 weeks was full of activity i did not get a chance to visit the VW factory which was only 15mins down the road from a hotel we stayed at for two nights.
anyways, i must admit its good to be back however everything seems significantly more expensive
speak to you all soon,
Rhys

hello,
I'm from SA, glad you had a good time over here. You're absolutely right that VW's are very popular here. The Golf V GTI's are very common and the 18" rims are available from the dealer as an optional extra. The Polo GTI's are slowly gaining popularity when compared to its big brother. The Citi golf's have been around for ages but they have a loyal fan base, my first car was a Velociti and I loved it! Check out mypicgallery if anyone's interested...
Cheers

no i didn't notice any new datto 1200 utes but did notice a sh*tload of old ones (well what i thought were old anyway )......and pretty much every one i saw had a few blacks sitting/standing in the tray (as per every other bloody ute around).
about the citi interiors......none ordered as yet . they weren't anything special but just noticed they were brand knew and all clean....shame i didn't get any photos.

the citi is very popular here - i had one prior to my polo gti - added lots of aftermarket extras to it - the reason why those cars are so popular is cos they can be easily modded - and guys are adding 2 liter turbo motors to those which actually give BMW M3's a hard time over a quarter mile run (400 meters)
the golf 5 gti sells in the boatloads here - every second person has one (it seems like it anyway) - the polo gti is a bit newer here - hence as Hail10 says is slowly gaining popularity - but the performance orientated guys here dont like the polo gti cos its only available as a 4 door and its comparatively expensive so most people pay the extra and get the golf 5 gti anyway
the golf 5 gti's have the factory option of the 18" detroit wheels - those are not replica's - and its only (ZAR) R4000 as an option over and above on the 17" wheels - so anyone paying (ZAR) R280 000 for a car wont mind paying that much more to add the bigger wheels
here is a crappy phonecam pic of my old citigolf
thats actually incorrect - the entire car is a mk1 but its only got bigger bumpers - the fenders are pure mk1 - there was a limited edition of R-line citi's with a 1.8 engine that had a modified MK2 bumper - but those kits proved troublesome and hence they were discontinued but nothing on the citi is actually based on the mk2 - its all pure mk1 with a bigger modern bumper - but you could remove the bumper and with a bit of work add in those small bumpers for that old school euro look - some guys do that anywayas you can see they are based on the golf mk1/mk2 (mk2 front, mk1 rear)

I've been to Seth Afrika twice in the last 5 years. The ex was from Cape Town. Going there again in 2010 for the WC since I have a free place to stay.
VW's and AMG's everywhere.
I also loved the City golf. When I went to the casino they had a display with 3 Golfs which had been modified by a local tuning shop. They were so so so hawt, too bad I forgot the camera. I tried to find some pics online when I came home but to no avail.
Recently I was also checking the online casinos and when i went to check it out, there was a bran new shiny VM Golf 6 black matted - this car is a DOPE. I tried winning this slots jackpot, but I didn't have luck this time.
