funny you should say this. my mate and i were on our way to a friendly game of ten pin bowls when we were joined side by side by a smart ass in an '06 bright yellow HSV GTO. he grinned at me, gave his beast a rev and hit the throttle. at the same time i dropped back to 2nd and punched the hell out of it. much to his disguist i slowly pulled away from him until we hit higher speeds at which he slowly past. next set of lights i sat behind him for a launch. we took off from the lights and to save myself runnig into his ass i had to change lanes and move past him with a smile til once again the higher speeds where he caught and slowly past...where he then continued on accellerating way beyond the speed limit.

*EDIT* oh, and i forgot to mention, about 2 or 3 sec after i let off the gas a wrx that was behind me at the lights came rushing past still trying to catch.....BAHAHAHAHA.

*EDIT #2* oh, and also, i realised about 5 mins later that i had my A/C on setting 2 the whole time. now for those Polo GTI owner out there, you know what i'm talking about when i say that the A/C in our cars really kill the power. i was p*ssed off about this.

i must admit i was very impressed with my little beastie and the abilities against the Aussie V8 beast!

    ~145kw Polo GTI (RRP$26,990 + $2000 APR flash) vs 297kw HSV GTO (RRP$78,990). hmmm

Sorry, went back and had confirming a look ...

    VE SS manual in 3rd = 3.6s
    VE SS V manual in 3rd = 3.8s
VE Calais auto in drive = 3.5s

Which means the Comodes are even worse than originally thought ...

Mmmmm, I once had the pleasure of showing a guy in Monaro CV8 Z with a very noisy (ie modded) exhaust that it was not actually that fast .... twice ...

Much to the delight of his girlfriend ......

I’ve easily cleaned up Aussie v8's.

    - only just the other day I polished off a 02 mod v8 commodore p plater.. with loud exhaust! he was pissed.. supra, wrx, civic type R to add to the list.....still wish I had more traction though..

also, when you guys drag, do you have esp on or off?

Off, but you need to control your foot. If you get wheelspin with it on, it will cut your power until you have traction again then give your power back and you'll spin again. Slight wheelspin is still a lot faster than traction control kicking in.

ooohh, we won't call it dragging. i call it "getting to the speed limit as fast as possible".....and it just so happens that another car is also doing this at the same time .

but as for the ESP, i always drive with mine off. when launching with ESP off in a modded Polo, clutch and throttle control is vital. obviously if you drop the clutch and plant the foot from standstill, you will just get a hell of a lot of wheelspin (unless you run semi-slicks and a good suspension setup) and it will be pointless.

i can't stand the engine cut-out....it doesn't sound very good for the car either (but hey, neither does launching it through the gears) .

Now stop it, lads, you'll get into trouble!

"Kills" posts prove nothing and should be deleted; on the other hand, timeslips and dyno charts should always be posted, in the interests of promoting endless hours of pointless argument.

Bloody bunch of hoons you lot are! They should be targeting the 20 and 30 somethings not the teenagers!!!

I can understand, even though I drive a slow car I still look out for early/mid 90's jap hatches and the occasional r32 to have a go at it, just as again don't get too carried away of course.

Relating to the oringinal question, if you are to buy a Polo GTI this morning and buy a VE SS this afternoon and line them up against each other this evening, the VE will chew the polo up and spit it out sorry to say.

don't get me wrong a polo is a great wee car, but you are not compairing apples with apples

It gose back to the big debait rotary 'vs' V8. 4 banger 'vs' V8. Stock standard the V8 will beat rotarys and 4 cyc with a few exceptions WRX EVOX...

maybe if they made a 5.0l 4 cyc Polo we could really compair the 2 but until that day there is no excuse that can be made V8 will will hands down.

and if we want to get into the " If I spend 1, 2, 3, 4K modifing" on my polo will it win??
    well if you spend 1, 2, 3, 4k on you polo and 1, 2, 3, 4k on the V8 the V8 will still win .
