To Assist Or Not To Assist

Hey guys,new to the forums,though been reading them for a while.I'm currently refurbishing my Mark4 Golf that's been a little unloved for a while,but that's another story!What I need some help with is my girlfriends 2006 Polo which is just coming out of warranty.Trying to work out whether we stick with VW roadside assist or go with the RACV option (obviosly we're in Melbourne).Any ideas re:advantages/disadvatages/experiences would be really helpful.Great to be part of a fantastic forum,cheers,Mark

Hey mate, I think VW just uses the local roadside assist wherever you are, eg NRMA, RACV, RACQ, so whichever one's cheapest would be the go IMHO. I believe ultratune gives you free roadside assist when you get serviced by them, not sure of the details though.

AFAIK VW roadside assist is NOT RACV,Q,NRMA etc.

VW Roadside assist is basically a truck service to take your vehicle to the nearest VW service centre. The suppliers of this service also transport Audi, Merc and most likely others back to the service centre.

Might be worth considering the VW extended warranty which includes VW assist. Not sure what it costs for a Polo, but for Golf it is around $1500. Ask your dealer.

I think VW Assist is actually run by these guys http://www.mondial-assistance.com.au/ as their logo was on some documentation i got when my car was towed.

So i'm guessing that VW and others roadside assistance is run by them.

I recently had a good look at the (Allianz backed) VW Extended Warranty pdf document from the VW Oz website, and couldn't find any mention of Roadside Assist, so I think while it may cover parts, labour and rental vehicles, they won't actually organise any of this stuff for you while you are stuck on the side of the road with your dead VW. So you have to sort it out yourself, not quite like the original 3 yrs warranty that does include Roadside Assist.

I would be happy to be proven wrong though.

In Sydney it's not a special truck, it's just they have particular tow company's that they use across the state.

I renewed with VW Roadside, was just easier.
