APR Question

Question guys...sorry if this is the wrong place to post it!

Insurance and chipping....did yall inform your insurance companies and if so what did this do to your costs with them??

i don't appreciate you referring to my post as rubbish. if you KNOW the full truth otherwise, feel free to post it up! if not, just ask questions. i have been told this from several mechanics, one of them being my vw mechanic. also, when i went through my test driving stage of looking for my car, EVERY sales person told me to do the same thing.......must be rubbish!

read it again, i said problems can arise, not 'will'. two friends of mine a few years ago bought the same car (lancer ES) brand new from the showroom (on the same day - it was thier 18th b'day presents). one babied it for the first 1500kms and was laughing at the other who was just thrashing it everywhere from the get go.

he ended being the one who was laughing because as soon as the guy started driving hard....

A. the car could never keep up
B. it was regularly in with zupps (mitsubishi dealer here)
C. he sold it after a year because he could not stand it anymore

some of the problems from memory (this is 5 years ago now) were fuel injection failure, blown transmission, misfiring??

the guy who thrashed his car still owns it and has never had a problem with it, apart from having a smashed front end after running a pole over

i understand these are not turbo VW's and i'm not one to just instantly 'believe what you hear', but i have heard it all before and to see it happen like that, why would i believe otherwise. i know it has only been one case but all my friends who have bought cars brand new from the showroom drive them hard at the start and not one has had a problem.

I did ask a question. Here it is again, since you didn't answer it.

"Exactly what are the "problems" that occur if you start "booting it" after 1000ks of not driving hard.?" Just to keep you happy, you can tell me what are the problems that CAN occur.

The story about your friends and their Lancers is purely heresay, and is in no way a proof of anything. There are lots of anecdotal stories about thrashing a car out of the showroom resulting in a better performing engine, but I've heard an equal number of stories where a car driven a little more sedately will still do over 300,000ks with no trouble. In my view, it's swings and roundabouts on that topic.

this was my answer. these are some of the problems he had and i imagine 'could' happen to any car.

i don't know a shopping list of problems that may arise but i've been told by knowledgable people. i'm not a mechanic and it's never happened to me so i really don't know. i'm not trying to be a know-it-all, i was just posting what i've been told. if ted from down the road's brother-in-law's dog mum's owner's postman told him and i heard that way, i wouldn't believe it.

why would i bother lying about this sort of thing??

call it what you want but i imagine the mechanics i know know a lot more than you when it comes to this sort of thing.

DP is with HFC together $1199from APR plus Brians Labour approx $325.

My understanding is that the reason for not babying the car from new isn't because of the ecu adapting, but for the piston rings to bed in.

I would say that the reason why APR would be saying that it takes a couple of days to acheive full power after chipping would be that the ECU would run timing and fuel mixtures pretty conservatively and would slowly get more aggressive with timings until the knock sensor kicks in. Its the same system that allows our engines to survive but be slower if we put lower octane fuel in.

Couldn't Agree more! Had my car in there today for chipping, dogbones and a service. Met Brian for the first time and I'd have to say you couldn't meet a nicer guy. The workshop is excellent and just an overall very professional establishment. Highly recommended. Its a shame the major dealers can't be the same.

And yes the chip..WOW!

And IMHO you should never thrash a car during the first 1000kms. Sure drive it with 'spirit' but I wouldn;t recommend redlining it. But of course its all subjective and we could argue all day; in the end its up to you.
