I don't see the point of a Polo R. If you afford one of those you could afford to be a Golf. Doubt it will happen anyway but could just be a torque steering pig. More power isn't the answer for FWD.

Not everyone wants to drive a golf

The point is, isn't a retuned Polo GTI as much as you'd ever want in a Polo?

It would be an over capitalisation.

If the hypothetical R polo actually was AWD, it would have a significant weight advantage over next size up cars like S3's/ WRX's etc. and would make for a nimble little weapon.

People (not many admittedly) are happy spend $37k on a RenaultSport clio for it's handling and that's a polo size car. Same with a JCW mini. Mind you, VW would have to convince people that the polo R could compete with these cars, so there might not be a huge market.

Would be a hoot but like others mentioned it's hard to believe it would be AWD.

Think Fiat Abarth's and Alfa's Mito GTA - they are some cracking little cars that a true polo R would have to compete with, in conjunction to the JCW Mini and Clio already mentioned. It's coming to be a very busy pocket rocket market - so the Polo could go either way for the greenlight to production.

Not really that much competition though as the Alfa and the fiat are significantly underpowered compared to what the polo R would be and the mini Jcw is stupidly priced at $50K+ (then add some options and it's more closely priced to an S3). It's only real competitor would be the Clio so there could be a good market for it here.

Probably getting off topic, but you sure about the Mito GTA being underpowered?? I recall reading some power figure in the 140kw+ ball park. The abarth may not put out more power than a stock polo, but power to weight will step it up. but I may be wrong on both calls....

I've test driven the Mito 1.4 turbo and I've to say I don't like how the powerit's being delivered, laggy than VW 1.8T and the power band always on the top end. And steering is just vague even with sport mode turned on. But if you're talking about Mito GTA, it should be using 1.75ltr turbo rated 240bhp stock - this should be fun!
