get a refund on the tensioner tool. A piece of flat bar drilled to accept two roll pins of the right size to fit the tensioner will take you 5 mins to make. I think I had to shorten my handle to get enough sweep on the tool but that was the only issue.

First round of parts from IE is in. Coilpacks.
Tidied up the engine bay, removed all the vacuum related junk on top of the rocker cover, properly resistor'd out.
one of the lines that was removed fit nicely back onto the DV, so re-used it. Hopefully it wont jump off at an inopportune time.
changed plugs too, to the NGK BKR7E, gapped to 28 thou. Im guessing it should be right with the bigger coil packs, or i'll find out the hard way.
It had platinums in before, and they were pretty flogged out, well beyond service usage probably explains the couple of rounds of detonation i heard at mid throttle on hot days. luckily it looks like there was no damage to the plugs, so heres hoping theres no damage anywhere else, also lucky I wasnt fully on it hard when I heard the det.
next job SAI removal/blanking/Timing belt/etc. didnt want to tackle the SAI today as it would involve dropping coolant twice.
actually looks like I have an engine now the cover is removed.
also, byproduct, discovered the "extender" for the oil cap was leaking near the R/C, so removed that and put the cap straight on. looks muuuch better.
took it for a quick blockie and gave it a couple of squirts and no issues. excellent.
Wondering if the ECU would have pulled timing for the det events. is there a way to reset without vag-com?

Ecu adapts constantly. No need to reset it except if there's stored faults. A cheap obd BT tool would do it.
