I have the RCD200 & intend getting an Iphone 3Gs in future - my first ipod product. I'm hoping to hook it up easily so that I can use the car stereos buttons to control it while it's charging. I also want phone calls to be heard through my cars speakers. It seems as if this product allows you to do both?

I thought the Polo GTIs had an Ipod connector already in the car, but the usefulness of it was very limited.

Is that why you went for this product, clone?

Also, do you have a photo of it all installed with your Ipod connected?

You can get a genuine VW Ipod connector installed as an accessory but they havent updated to be compatible with the latest generation of Ipods / Iphones so it wont charge the device (ubless you buy a separate charge convertor) only for playback.

I ordered the xcarlink for many reasons

    1) it also has an aux input for connecting any mp3 player or device with a 3.5mm output jack
    2) it is compatible with the lastest gen ipods / iphones and will charge the unit as well
    3) xcarlink has a bluetooth car kit as an option
    4) price - VW quoted me $395 for suppy and fitting the device (or maybe it
was $295 cant remember) I bought the xcarlink with the bluetooth kit from the UK all delivered for about $220 AUD or so.. You can get it cheaper from Aussie dealers but I didnt trust they had the right version for charging nor did they have the bluetooth option)

I dont have any photos but I can take some if you like however installation was easy as pie and I am the most unintelligent person when it comes to electrical stuff or car radios.

Took the radio out with the supplied keys, was a bit tricky and unsure if I was doing the right thing but worked it out.

I wanted to put the device on the shelf under the dash and was able to feed the cords through the whole under the steering wheel, under the shelf and to the back of the stereo.

Plugged in the device and all good.

Next plugged in the bluetooth kit and placed the mic on the door frame. No need to remove any panels as there is a liftable seal all the way down to the shelf where I tucked the wire under. And the bluetooth answe key sits on the shelf too

I havent received my 3gs yet still waiting on delivery so cant confirm how well it works with unit but I am confident it will be good. You can use the next and prev keys on radio to skip tracks and apparently if you use the disc select key you can change playlists.

I am using it at the moment with my N96 for bluetooth and working good. When a call comes in, it still rings on the handset so even if I have the stereo turned off or on the radio I can switch to hear the person talking

However I just realised maybe because iphone is an ipod or a phone I dont know if that means if you can hear a phone call through the ipod connector when a call comes in or if it cuts out.. Thats a good question wonder if anyone can answer. I'm thinking no because the device is only designed to control ipod functions as it thinks you have an ipod. If a call comes in the iphone would stop playing music so you still might need the bluetooth kit to use it for handsfree phonecalls

    hope this helps

Excellent information clone_tk422 - thank you for posting it up.

iPhone does not stream phone call audio through the iPod interface, you will need BT for that.

I thought as much, and also the bluetooth I got was the xcarlink one at www.xcarlink.co.uk

I realised you need bluetooth anyways to be able to speak as you need the mic

But hoping there is no compatibility problems. I mean the device is expecting an ipod to be plugged in and a phone is using the bluetooth what happens when those two devices are the same - the iphone.. I hope one doesnt cancel out the other when a call comes in.. Or if you are using phone while music is play hope that doesnt cut the music out..

Well I guess I will find out

I am yet to fit my Xcarlink Ipod adaptor, as I am away atm, and it is sitting at home with the pile of other stuff to fit to my car, but with the adaptor, is there anywhere behind or below the stereo to mount the box that comes with the adaptor, or dose this have to go in the glove box??

Well the box is meant to be accessible so the cords are long enough to route it to the glovebox or wherever or in my case underneath the steering wheel

Ok, but can it fit in behind the stereo or below it?? I don't want the box in my glove box or under my steering wheel, or anywhere it can be seen or get in the way of stuff. I just want to be able to see the cord and the ipod/iphone, nothing more. Just curious.

    Well not sure on that.

Perhaps you could mount it underneath the shelf under the steering wheel then feed the ipod cord up to the shelf or down onto the floor

Not sure if there is much room behind the radio to sit it you would have to have a poke around in there.

I'm quite happy having it on the shelf under the steering wheel, I dont see notice it. Others put it in the glovebox or one other poster put theres behind the card holder but it required some modifications.

I have the bluetooth part so I needed it to reach as far as possible as the bluetooth cord wasnt exactly that long to run it up the door frame for the mic.

    Good luck
