    Addressing my gearbox

    Hey gang.

It's about time I sorted my gearbox out.

Each gear's got it's own sort of noise which is starting to bother me no end. Makes the car sound like a heap of **** whilst driving it.

First gear is the worst culprit, I've been told the main drive is pitted and as such I tend to short shift first as it's noisy as all fcuk.

    3rd is pretty whiny too.

I'm planning on taking the car off the road for however long it'll take to perform the task of fixing it up so it doesn't sound like it's got straight cut gears.

My question to my fellow polo brethren is whether I should do extra work whilst the box is out.

    My options are as follows:
    1) Fix the gears
    2) Fix the gears + LSD
    3) Fix the gears + LSD + Clutch Upgrade
    4) Fix the gears + LSD + Clutch Upgrade + flywheel (SM/DM)

Budget isn't an issue at the moment, but I don't want to go overkill if I'm not going to see any advantages.

Useful information: I may track it in the future. It's currently 130 odd kw atw. I plan on ditching the stance it's currently exhibiting for a more practical and 'fun' height so as to utilise the power available at all times (other than just point and shoot as it happens at the moment).

Share your knowledge, get into a keyboard war, call each other names, I don't care I just want opinions at this stage.

I'll be investing in some quality rubber to go onto a set of lightweight OZ rims i've got lying around too so the mods will be channeled to the ground accordingly.

    All depends on how much power you want in the future IMO. If you were going something like Stage III+ I would personally get the following;

SQS 5 speed upgraded syncro gear set with longer usable ratios
    7lb fidanza lightweight flywheel (ECS)
either Stage II (250whp) or III (400whp) clutch kit from ECS
    Wavetrac TBD

    And then proudly FTW

I wouldn't bother with an LSD at this stage. If you were going to get very serious (I'm talking because racecar) with it, then yea. But that's hard to know until you get out there and start doing it, imo. (Hence why I won't be going too nuts on the becauseraceseat until I've got some good track time and can better decide what direction I want to take it, and how far etc)

Perhaps a second hand box might be the cheaper alternative for now? (I know, cost not an object)

I'd get a new clutch regardless, and maybe flywheel, but I don't know what works best on pogs in regards to lightened flywheels etc.

Good call. I'm not a fan of the supposed loss in everyday driveability with the lightened fly wheel.
The risk with a 2nd hand box is the possibility of it being just as rubbish as my current one.

Yep, that's true! (I also have no idea what a 2nd hand polo box goes for)
