Yeah Sean but then it needs to be all rewired etc so Im guessing its just not worth it for them to spend time repairing it.

Just like they replaced my whole gearbox instead of replacing components.

I'm skeptical about the possibilities of them replacing the vehicle for you at all. However, I'm more than certain that they will repair it for you once you mention a solicitor may be involved. Escalate the case if you get no joy out of dealing with the yard's service department.

If they wont cover it then insurance should cover it. However, insurance will once again access the viability of repair costs, so fingers crossed they put it down as a repairable write-off (as I know I wouldnt want to be in a car that was previously fire damaged, not to mention the annoying smell of smoke).

With that said, just keep a firm position on where you stand and get the most out of a bad situation!

Fire damage is very expensive to repair and insurers don't like them because costs can blow out. It's difficult to judge without photos but if it is as bad as Koz's first post indicates, there will be much melted aluminim and plastic to replace as well as everything electrical. Captive VW parts are expensive even for dealers, so it is not beyond the bounds of possibility that they would simply lodge a claim with their insurers and pay Koz out. Will be interesting to see how this unfolds.

Koz, hope you get a prompt and satisfactory outcome.

Bummer! But you're OK, and it's only a car

The first thing you need to do is take some time and document all the facts of the situation -- start with when you dropped your car to the dealer and why -- all very detailed and methodical.

Take this to your solicitor together with all documentation relating to the car -- it's service record, warranty documents, and your full insurance policy including PDS.

Ask the solicitor for initial advice as to how to proceed, but first ask him if he will give you that advice either gratis, or in a way which is recoverable either through insurance or the warranty claim. Most will jump at an "exciting" case such as this. Stick to the facts ...save the emotion, even though it hurts and you are angry. You will get a result but it is pointless speculating in this forum what that result might be until the process is properly set in train.

Be aware that in fact it may be contrary to your interests in receiving fair compensation to identify the dealer or any other personnel on this forum at this stage.

It would also do you good not to publicly mentioned dealership names and persons related at the dealership to this incident. VWA and many other authoritive bodies keep a tab of what is posted on this forum and on others as well. It would be in your best interest to keep these names hush hush.

No point of speculating whether or not you will get a new replacement vehicle or a repaired vehicle until the dealer physically assesses the damage of the fire. If insurance ends up being involved, refer to your PDS and see what insurance is willing to cover (as most insurance companies have a new for old policy if in the event of a write-off on vehicles under 3 years old).

I wouldn't go that far with the "theory" but wouldn't be so naive. They have a very large business and brandname to look after and have the legal muscle to follow through and they do look out for their business and its best interests.

Hmmm GT3, I know where your coming from. I really skeptical about having in repaired - I just dont trust them doing a proper job after this episode.

Im traumatized and mentally scarred and too scared to drive the car again out of fear it will go up in flames!
