9N Polo GTi - DNA Tuned

Last week, I spoke with John @ DNA to discuss a tune for my GTi after JohnBu's referral.

5 Days into it and all i can say is WOW! Its like I have to get used to a whole new car again. I have taken it for quite a few long drives over the past few days and can tell the fellow Pog owners that this is definitely a tune worth trying out.

I went for the more agressive profile straight up. Which put me from 110kw / 220nm up to 145kw / 315nm. (possibly a little more kw with the SEAT intake and BMC fitted)

The other profile on offer produces the same kw, but only 290nm.

Apart from feeling a little loose in the wet (as expected!) the power comes on strong, yet smooth. I do notice high up in the RPM (around 4500) the turbo backs off a little for a quick second, then comes back on much stronger again right through to redline, which gives you that "ear to ear grin" you were hoping for!

upon driving off, you can feel the power is always there under your foot, ready to go, but as long as you keep the foot that couple of mm up, steady driving is easy to maintain with this tune.

I have never had an ECU tune done on any of my cars quite like this one and IMHO its been my best "bang for buck" mod ive had done in a long time.
JohnBu mentions in his thread that he will be putting his GTi on the dyno at HPF on the next dyno day. I will be in for that one aswell and look forward to seeing the ATW results.

John was very professional, and very patient with the 50 odd questions i had for him! And he was nice enough to make the epic journey out to my work to perform the inital read and answer all the questions I had for him without any hesitation.

If I plan to perform any engine mods requiring another change to the ECU, I will be sure to give John a call.

Many thanks to John and DNA Tuning (and JohnBu for recommending him)

    Cheers
    Adam

Cool. Was this just a map or was it tweaked in any way?

That was just a map. John came to me and took a copy of my standard ECU which he sent off to DNA in the UK (he did the read and i heard from him that night, so very quick turn around!). They modified the file to the profile that I was after, and he loaded that on

Thanks for ur thoughts hazrd. When I first saw DNA-Tuning introduce themselves i checked out their site and it seemed very cheap but didn't know how much it would cost in aussie dollars. But no one seemed to have tried their tune and since I'm completely noob at most things cars I didn't really wanna be a pioneer xD this seems like a very good option now since as a student the cost of an APR tune is a little costly. Thanks for the good reviews =]

Is there a a lower boost option?

    John,

Now that you have the ECU mapping from the SRS-II information gained from Adam's Polo GTI car in Melbourne can you now supply the Chip upgrade software in an SRS-II unit - without the need for the unit to read the stock information from a prospective customer's car?

I understand that the stock 1.8 litre Polo GTI engine runs at a turbo boost of 0.5-0.6 Bar to achive the stock output of 110Kw/220Nm. The thing I am concerned about with most of your competitor's ECU upgrade products is pushing the boost to 1.0 bar (or more).

In considering the DNA product - so that I don't lose any of my current instant roll-on power (without turbo lag) - do DNA offer a lower boost / lower power option that the 145 Kw/315 Nm achieved with Adam's car?

My ideal would be 130-135 Kw and up to 280 Nm - with the ability to run on 95 Octane if caught on a drive where 98 Octane was not available.

If a lower boost option is availble could you confirm a price for the software upgrade and SRS-II module?

I'm pretty sure the ECU is smart enough (knock sensor etc) that if you do need to put 95 octane in there it will compensate and retard the timing even after a tune. No reason for it to blow up.

Also, a tune won't increase lag, as that's a function of the physical properties of the turbo and engine... the boost will still come on at the same time, a tuned car will simply let it build up to a higher value before opening the wastegate (along with adding some fuel and timing to go with the extra boost). I honestly haven't heard of anyone having a problem caused just by getting their car tuned.
