    98 vs 95 RON - An Evaluation

I've not seen this before so though it might add some value to the debate.

Running a std tune 2009 GTI.

    Consumption:

    95 RON 8.9 l/100km over 1,574 km (4 tanks)

    98 RON 8.4 l/100km over 3,419 km (8 tanks)

Driving style and journey are the same for each (34 km commute with A/C on for +/-80%)

    Performance:

There is a definite performance drop with 95 vs 98. It isn't dramatic, and for commuting one wouldn't notice too much. Interestingly the biggest difference is on take off. With 95 I need to concentrate on having sufficient revs up, with 98 not so.

IIRC Fifth Gear UK did an experiment with a MK5 GTI with UK standard unleaded which is 95 RON and VPower/BP Ultimate so 98 RON - it was about 15hp at the hub difference - that includes flushing the system and letting ECU adapt in between changes - V Power was better than BP Ultimate.

I used BP Ultimate or BP 95 from the same bowser for each
