    60k service cost

    I was quoted $720 and $780 today for the 60k service on a GTi...

    Can you get the parts and do it yourself. The sparkplugs (apparently replaced at 60k...) were $170 for 4 !!

    Also oil (eng...$80) air/fuel/pollen filter change...but up to $780 in total !??

    You can get decent spark plugs (NGK iridiums) for about $15 each. Oil only has to meet 502.00 spec & can be had as cheap as $35 if you keep an eye out for specials (Castrol Edge Sort 5w-30 at Supercheap/Repco).

    Sure you can do it yourself, but are you competent & do you have the tools?

    Have you got a price from an independant VW specialist in the area? A quick google reveals The Beetle Exchange & Canberra VW Centre - not sure what their rep is like.

    Your plugs from VW are Platinum plugs mate and trade price is around $25 per plug. If you use anything other than these by all means but remember the change period will change with them.

    Iridium sparks suck!!!!!! They are good for about 5000km but that's it. Don't put yourself through it, stick with the Platinums.

    Had NGK Iridiums in the AGG engine for 35,000km until i sold the car. Never a problem. The change out period was 50,000km IIRC.

    Maybe no good for turbo engines? i've know a few people to fit them to Skylines & they've only lasted 5000km or so but that was because there were underlying issues & they were using the spark plugs as a bandaid solution.

    When the iridium plugs became popular heaps of people used them in their Rotax kart engines, but we stuck with the platinum.

    All the Iridium runners had to buy themselves atmo guages and were changing mixture three times a day, while we almost never had to change ours. They'd all be in the engine start area before a heat warming their engines up lest they bog in the roll-arounds, but we just went out "cold".

    We tried them, of course, since they were supposed to be the latest thing that gave you 1/10th per lap on their own (they didn't).

    We still stuck with the much more adaptable platinums....much more tolerant of less than perfect combustion conditions.

    Ahhhh, OK. Now it's making sense.

    The Golf probably was probably reasonably rock-steady being a bit of a shopping trolley.

    Probably the iridiums would be a bad thing when combined with the lean burn of FSI.
