Thread: 4motion setup

    4motion setup

    Just a twinkle in my eye at the moment, but worth some discussion on the forum.

    Theoretically things you'd need to begin a 4motion conversion would be:
    1. 4motion gearbox and transfer case.
    2. Rear diff and cradle
    3. Custom prop and drive-shafts
    4. Suitable front diff to match.
    5. Custom rear swing arms and hubs

    Then there's custom rear floorpan, fuel tank, etc.

    I haven't had a chance to look at a Polo 02R gearbox but there may be a chance the 4mo transfer case can be adapted. All depends if the lugs are there to tap out. It might also be possible to use the factory cradle and adapt mounts into the rear of the Polo, if not, something custom would be required.

    Obviously there's a fair amount of fabrication including rear floorpan, fuel tank, etc, but it could be done.

    And wiring and ecus, etc etc, why not look at the syncro set up we used to have. Special edition VR6 came with that, Golf Rallye came with it and Mk2 Golf syncro had it, much more basic and no looms to worry about. I cut my teeth on them however saw the intro of Haldex gen one and 2 so all different in MANY ways
    The Syncro had 020 tranny set up and not 02A,J or R. But the VR6 and Rallye did have cable shift so if anything that would be where i would start my research and you wontfind any of that over here so your search will go far and wide..If you are going to the effort of 4motion you would have to go 6 speed 02M in my book but a MASSIVE job, i think my 6N2 is big ( which it is!) Car would be off the road for more than a day LOL

    There is a guy on Edition 38 who was doing the conversion, guess all you need is the parts from a S3/TT. Its the fabrication part that is hard, unless you can weld and do your own fabrication.

    See, this is why I like polo owners, you're all supportive mk4 golf might also be worth a look from overseas because they had vr6 and r32. Someone in the uk did an AWD GTI I think it was and that thing hammered!

    Found it

    I remember he was having suspension issues in the rear as there was not enough travel for the trailing arms? to move up and down

    Good links guys.

    Having a bit of a gander on ELSA trying to get an idea of the rear space constraints.
    Funny you mention that Troy, that's the only thing I really see being a problem.

    Yeah that is the only problem, changing from a beam the suspension arms need to have room to move up and down, guess you would have to build some kind of space frame in the back

    Might have been worth having the boot floor off the TT as well. The rear shocks aren't vertical, they point backwards.

    Mmm, what about scrapping the IRS rear altogether and sticking with the beam rear axle?
    Two arms to hold the diff on.


    Or a DeDion tube setup. It's a sort of hybrid IRS/beam. You can see the basic principle here --






    The more I see it, the more I like it.
    The rear diff fixes to the body and the 'beam' connects the two arms around the diff.
