I have never had a problem with shifting into second when going hard. By the sounds of other peoples gearbox dramas, I have been pretty lucky...No gearbox issues what so ever.

Same as Blitzen ... but do a search. Most of those with gb problems have symptoms between 1st & 2nd.

i have just had my second gear and synchromesh replaced under the warranty - so this is a common problem all around the world on the gti

i have to now relearn to change from 1st to 2nd smoothly - cos ive been doing a delayed change ie shifting into neutral and waiting for the rev to drop before going into second which was th eonly way i could drive without getting the gears grating and crunching

but its been fixed sometime last week - so im gonna have to wait a while to see if the symptoms pitch up again

is this not the 35A7 recall as referred to in the following post: http://www.vwwatercooled.org.au/newf...ht=polo+recall

a lot of people were having this issue and apparently they change the gearbox fluid from synthetic back to the old mineral stuff. once changed over, it's meant to make a big difference to the gear changes.
i'm guessing this is what your problem was and that is what they did.

Does anyone else use Nulon in their g'box? Be interesting to see if anyone who has broken a gearbox AND has used an additive.

The box in my 97 Polo makes more noise than my missus when I come home late at night and I haven't been able to get 5th for the last 1000k's. Might just see how far I can push the gearbox before it finally breaks. Hopefully by then I'll have my new GTI.

    Cheers

If you arn't getting 5th, and your car is that old, you might want to get your shift bushes checked out. If they are plastic, and that old, they may have worn out, and are limiting the amount of travel in your gear selector...I have had it before in a previous car, and I have read about it on other threads on the forum(SEAT Cupra comes to mind straight away). Not too expensive to rectify(about $250 to $450), but it beats a gearbox rebuild straight up!!
