2006 polo gti engine light issue

    Hey guys,

so I've owned this car about a week and a few days in I got a check engine light.
I got racv to come out and check it and they said looks like the temp sensor got out of sync and reset it for me.
2 days later I got the light again. The next racv guy said tAke it to a mechanic and get the sensor replaced.
so I did and they replaced the sensor.
3 days later (today) yet again The engine light has come on.

Has anyone else has issues with this or any input on what could be causing it. I've read a few things like petrol cam not being on tight enough and setting off the emissions but honestly I have no idea.

We can't advise you what to do on the small amount of information you have given us. There's a vast number of reason you could have a CEL lit.

You need to have it scanned by someone who knows VWs. There's plenty of places around Melbourne that can do that.

I'll be in Melbourne all week with work and will have my VCDS cable with me. Staying in the Docklands working nights at Tuallamarine.

Some guy guessing is getting you broke, not fixing.

Wouldn't have a clue without knowing the code thown, get it checked or buy a cable and check it yourself. Have a look at your fluids because its easy.

So I had RACV come out again. He didnt give me the code but said the temp sensor was out of sync again.
He cleared the codes and the car seems to be fine.
I also disconnected the battery to give the full car a reset and to my surprise I think it is running a little better. But i could be wrong.

Stupid HU though is asking for codes which i don't have.
Im not too fussed as my new pioneer 2650bt is going in next week

Your RACQ man isn't giving you anything here matey.

Disconnecting the battery > Throttle Body Alignment (TBA) - Ross-Tech Wiki

This procedure details how to perform a Throttle Body Alignment (TBA) on many VW/Audi vehicles. This procedure cycles the motorized throttle body through various states (idle, part throttle, WOT) to relearn their positions. Some examples of reasons to perform a TBA:

The vehicle's battery has been disconnected and re-connected
The ECU has been removed and reinstalled
The Throttle Body has been cleaned or removed and reinstalled
The Accelerator Pedal has been removed and reinstalled

A temp sensor is a temperature dependent resister, it can go out of tolerance or fail completely. They don't go out of sync?

I am in Melbourne all week from tomorrow, happy to look at it for you.

Im so annoyed I didn't get to catch up with you Gavin my GF's mum went into hospital so we had to look after he little brother a sis as well as hit the hospital most nights.

After a few more weeks the issue is still happening however I have surgically narrowed it down.
I read on some forums that the issue could be the fuel cap sealing properly so for a week I never filled past $15. issue didn't happen still for around the 4 days.
I then started recording my KM in my phone and came to a very surprising result. My check engine light is going off give or take a km or 2 every 240k's
    This is very very weird.
It was really just puzzling me because if it was a major issue. once I reset the battery to clear the code I would expect the light to appear on the next trip.

It is going into the mechanics in a few weeks (once I get tax back) for a major service + timing belt etc etc as hit has just hit 100,000ks and i want to know she is mechanically sound.

Just thought id give an update.
Hopefully its nothing big like a CAT and once the full service has happened she comes back purring

You can get the ebay vag com cables for like $9 from china, or $15 locally and sent within a few days. They'll say they need windows XP to run, though I found newer drivers which overcame that issue - eBay VAG COM to work on Win7 and Win8

A scan will provide further info. Otherwise find someone local with the genuine Ross Tech cable, there's plenty of members in melbourne with them.
