93, 1.6 16V (woot) and it's still a carb. and actually is still own it, and it's as stock as a rock! (not worth spending money on!)
handling is terrible (sh*tty chassis + skinny crappy tyres)
although it is a bit of fun, (controlled understeering always scares the passengers good!) and a bit of oversteer if you know how to through it around and worn suspension too. that helps
had to really poke it to get it going (16V) apart from that it's real gutless down low, but'll move if you really try, as some of the VIC boys can attest to!
then i bought the mk 1, which currently isn't running, but i love it to bits, handles great, and is defiantly a hoot to drive. miss it so much.
What happened to the enthusiest attitude on this site??
You would be surprised how well an excel with coil overs, sway bar, short shifter and a turbo kit goes.. IMHO I think the excel was quicker than a standard polo GTI in a straight line as it only had to cart around ~950kg.. it dyno'd at 92kW at the front wheels running 13psi on a stock 1.5 hyundai twin cam motor and never gave any trouble.. Mechanically they are very well put together.
As I don't think you have owned one you should keep your narrow minded opinion to yourself
Also got 149dB out of a single 12" woofer in it

I've been through my fair share of cars...
AE82 Corolla
'62 850cc Mini van
'71 Ford Capri
'92 Honda Accord
'78 Mini 1275LS (Hot motor, big AP brakes, Skyline eater through the hills )
'76 Mini
'75 Mini
'95 XR6 Falcon Wagon
'07 Polo GTI
So yeah, there's been a few. Ironically, the mini's are still the most fun of all. The joys of classic motoring do eventually get on your nerves, though. Like no wipers, bad headlights, no heater, dodgy brakes,
