those couple of pictures explain what i meant about wheel gap in my previous post.
The red polo looks nice cos there is no wheel gap. When your wheel gap exceeds the tyre height it starts to look a bit naff.

Having said that. Not many polos go as low as the red one! most lowered ones ive seen still have a substantial wheel gap

Tim I see what you mean about the gap.
How about max width? I have the option of 17 x 8" but I wouldn't want any wheel arch scraping...might get my ruler and see how much clearance there is.

Tyres wont scrape if you get the right sized tyre on the 8s. Id go 8s over 7s any day. 215/40 will sit nicely on the 8

and the reason for that is most owners dont want their teeth rattled loose cos some other guy thinks that their ride looks naff - if it is dropped to the extent that the red onew is dropped - firstly it isnt very driveable because not only will you get lots of rubbing you will also have your shocks bottoming out like crazy all the time even if you use shortened shocks - so only show cars that are rarely driven can look like that

either way 18's dont make a whole load of sense on the Polo unless you really want all the associated gearbox problems that get heightened with those as well - and i reckon that 17's are the way to go - having tried all wheel configs already thats just my opinion

Thanks Naughty, last thing I want to do is compromise handling and performance and possible damage. Be weary of "upselling" wheel and tyre sellers. My main issue was to fill the guards out a bit and improve handling but I'm onto the group buy for the Blisten shocks and H$R springs now.
it's all learning for me. I'm an ex-Toyota Surf novice 4WDriver....now I have discovered "fast" Thanks APR!!!

Well, Ive been riding on 18"x7.5 215/35 for about 3 months now, driven in all sorts of condition and speeds (every ounce that i could get out of the wee beastie, if only there was a 6th gear)). So far i've had no problem whatsoever with tyre rubbing/scrubbing. Speedo is still fine- in fact it still reading over a little than actual speed according to my tomtom.
Having said all this, my car susp is still stock. I'm still umming and arring whether to go coilovers or just springs, but i do want to lower the front at least 40mm and rears 50mm.
