Have you messed with the shifter cables? If they are not aligned correctly they could cause this kind of problem(small problem)
If you didn't touch the cables, then it could be the shifter forks(big problem)
Whereabouts is your car parked?
Hi guys,
Has anyone had any troubles entering reverse gear?
I've parked my car and now the gear locks when trying to enter reverse , 1st and second.
Would like to know any quick fix so I can go home.
Thanks.

Hi. I'm at rossmoyne senior high right now. Only thing I've done today is changing the tyres. Is there anything I could do now?
Life is all good ! Thanks to TDIFan who drove out and got it sorted out. Gearbox was crunching on a 20 cent coin. Such is my luck. Thanks !
Turns out the coin has gone further in the gearbox. While the gearbox works fine now, it still sticks every now and then. Will have to remove the entire centre console tomorrow to dig it out before it makes more damage.
Is it worthwhile to visit a mechanic to remove the entire gearbox to get there? Or is it something I can diy ?

The gearbox is in the engine bay. The selector mechanism is where the centre console is.
Pull out the centre console & clean out all the rubbish around the selector mechanism & then decide if more work is required.

I used to think I was anal-retentive until I started getting involved in car forums
Noted. Selector mechanism* haha. Will do, thanks guys
I had this last week when I parked facing downhill.
Turned the car off came back 30 minutes later,
put it in reverse pushing down as hard as possible with handbrake on, started to accelerate till confident it was working and then released handbrake & it worked.
Not sure what was wrong
Yeah ! Could be the same issue? Mine was locked out of the 1st, 2nd and reverse. Cycled through the gears for some time and finally made it into 1st and 2nd but the coin was pretty stubborn and remained blocking my way into reverse. Pulled off the shifter cover and removed the coin, good as new ! Had to realign the gears as it was slightly out from the fiddling about though. All in all, bad luck but a good learning experience.
