    There's also a bushing that can wear, causing difficult gear selection.

    It's another one of those things I've been meaning to get around to doing on mine, before I sell it off.

    I too have adjusted many a 6n1 (your 98 model), its easier as a 2 person operation and just adjust the linkage that way. Also check the nylon bush/cup in the ball that is part of the linkage too, they can crack and come away which won't help the adjustment either
