    Can anyone recommend a competent VW mechanic in or near Townsville please?

    You could try European Car Specialists who are located in Currajong. They have good reviews.

    Also A1 Autocare Specailsts who are also in Currajong. They have good reviews.

    Both specialise in servicing European cars.
