With regard to the jerkiness, I find that the DSG improves on a manual in that regard but is not as smooth as a torque converter auto. That's what most testers are comparing it to when they say it is jerky.
But with a torque converter auto, you also get the poor response and fuel economy. I think the DSG is a good compromise, as someone who likes the response and "feel" of a manual, but can't be bothered anymore in traffic. People who truly prefer automatics probably wouldn't like it.
