Just updating this incase anyone is interested - my previous post depicting that my mates DSG was dead turned out to be incorrect......its the engine ECU that has died.

Dead ECU has been confirmed by European Car Centre in Newcastle after the car was towed there a few days ago. Got to get it towed to Audi/VW to get a new ECU installed and coded etc to his key/immobiliser. Old ECU had a Viezu tune too so that will now be lost and ill have to help him get another tune to suit the new ECU. Apparenty around $2,500 for the new ECU.

Im off to eat my hat now....

He is looking at approx $2,700 for a new mechatronics unit (from Harding Performance with a 3-4 week wait), DSG oil and filter change (needs to be done when replacing mechatronics despite having the DSG serviced about 1 year ago), and the labour component. It's going to be somewhere around $4,000 - 4,500.

That's one of those situations where you'd be happy at first. And then just as pissed off.

Any idea what contributed to frying the ecu?

Is that because Viezu tie their code to an ECU (as opposed to a car) and refuse to reload for free or is it because you don't want to go back there?

    Thanks for the update

Holy crap! Is this a Golf R we're talking about? What year? No warranty due to ECU having been flashed?

How long (i.e.) kms are the DSG boxes expected to last under normal operation. I've only done 73,000km but extended warranty runs out soon. Have not had an issue with the gearbox so far (touch wood)

Nope - it just died. Was literally perfectly fine one minute and then dead the next.

Nothing against Viezu at all. The tune was applied to the ECU which is now dead (it didnt die because of the tune - let me make that clear). Its been running a tune for about a year with no problems. All i meant is that i will need to help him get a new tune from Viezu to suit the new ECU.

Get it serviced every 60,000km and it should give you many miles of trouble free motoring. Plenty of guys in the MK5 section with 100+ thousand kms on their car.

    Makes sense.

They say they will replace the tune if VW reflashes it to stock so he may be in luck.

A place at Warners Bay is doing Viezu sales now so he may be able to get something sorted if he doesn't have the hand ccontroller.

Ah no prob Lucas, when you said "another tune" I took that as a "different" one.

Yeh we will have to chat withViezu about it. He has the hand controller so worst case scenario he has to pay a few hundred to get the hand controller wiped clean and buy a new tune to suit the new ECU.

WHAT? Really. Do you replace the circuit boards or something?

All good Ryan. He is staying with Viezu but will just need a new tune from them to suit the new ECU.
