I would consider a manual next time. The DSG is great, but as always there is the curiosity about the grass being greener on the other side. I didn't even test drive a manual when I bought mine, once I drove the DSG I had to have it. Next time around I will definitely test drive a manual, and make a decision then.
The best situation is the one that CW has outlined, have a mix of transmissions in the garage. The rants about one being better than another is just mind numbing
I also have an A3 turbo and liberty GT spec B both manual and all of them are great fun to drive. back in the R the DSG is just as enjoyable to use.
There's no denying the vag 6mt gearbox is a nice thing the ratios are well sorted and the shift is great
Our Up! is a manual. It's a fun little thing but doesn't offer a comparable driving experience to a GTI :-(Quote:

When I was in the market for a MKV GTI, I didn't consider a Swift. :facepalm:
Many (the naive/inexperienced) fail to realise that the fun factor in driving can be achieved in cars with far less "credibility" than a numbed down, jack of all trades/master of none, bloated, warm hatch (GTI) ;)Quote:

I wasn't in the market for an MX5 when I was buying my GTI or the R but it has much more fun factor to drive than either (SF will agree), not because it is manual but because of the dynamics.

MX is just a delight to drive... but only when my wife lets me :)
When I have the money and space, my "drivers car" will be a late 70's Porsche 911.
But for a fun daily driver I think a GTI or R is pretty hard to beat all round.
We had MX5s on fleet a few years ago, and I took one whenever one was available. Sure, a hoot to drive, but so impractical as a DD
