DSG for the 2nd time. My last car, a Passat had DSG and it was better than any auto I've ever driven and I got stick of manuals when I lived in a traffic jam city. I don't like the way VW have + forward and - down. It seems unnatural and I can't get the hang of it. mazda is opposite and it works for me. Maybe it could be switchable?
Hi guys, would appreciate your input - looking at purchasing a Golf R and initially was going to get the magical DSG however there seems to be quite a few issues with these and felt that when taking the test car through the hills it was upchanging and downchanging by itself despite being in manual mode. This has made me consider the traditional 6spd manual so I feel more in control of the vehicle.
Any thoughts from your experiences would be great to hear.

It is really a personal thing so not really sure what you want to be told. There have been a few issues with the DSG unit but it is not common as it is running the older 6 gear wet unit not the 7 gear dry unit which has plagued the 118s.
For me the DSG has settled in just nicely and as you get used to it and drive it accordingly the perceived issues of lag and control are not noticeable. Do I sometimes wish I had more control .. yes, are those time more often than not.. no. Much happier being able to climb into it and enjoy one of the smoothest drives I have ever experienced.
I'm still trying to find that sweet spot with the DSG. D mode seems to change up far too quickly, whereas S seems to hold the gears too long and it nearly always redlines or close to it. S is good with the downshifts though.
As far as manual or DSG, tough question. I got DSG for two reasons, one because my girlfriend will be learning to drive in the R (Yes scary prospect :P) and second because the convienience of not having to always change gears is good. Some days though I wish it was a manual.
S mode in the DSG is very very quick compared to the manual but in saying that the manual is certainly a nice gearbox and a pleasure to use with well chosen ratios compared to some cars.
My own damned R with DSG is the first non manual that I have owned in a very long time and I was initially worried that I'd be disappointed in my choice but no. OK I will be remapping the shift points to my taste in D mode but apart from that its really pretty good and I'd buy DSG again no question
Not an R, but I'm reasonably happy with DSG in my GTD. I drive in Manual mode almost exclusively (use D in carparks, or when I'm eating :) ) and find it works quite well.
When I try to go too hard through twisty bits, I lose track of which gear I'm in - but I don't spend a lot of time doing this, as I have another car for having fun in twisties, so I'd probably get better with more practice. Of course, having a diesel, I don't have the rev range so I need to change gears much more.
Chose DSG for my previous GTI and also for my current R.
Not because of the faster shifting but for the flexibility it offers.
Paddle shifts, manual shifts, full auto, plus being able to combine all together if I want plus the DSG shifts sound great :)
I'm not planning on keeping it after warranty however. It isn't that reliable long term in my opinion.
While the others keep trying to convince themselves in spite of what they know and have experienced that DSG is alright, I'm going to go against the grain and say avoid it and have a real driving experience and go the manual.

Why not go further and have the real driving experience with no power steering, no power brakes, no AC, no electronics
