Manual.
I like driving and can't stand having no clutch. Auto's bore me.
The six speed is also a great little gearbox. Unless you need to do things other than driving, while driving, I've never felt the need for an Auto in traffic. My left leg isn't doing much else anyway.
The DSG is a cracker but I prefer the cheaper manual.

I drive in a lot of Sydney traffic at times, but I got the manual anyway. The DSG is great for traffic light drags, there is no denying that. But I found when I test drove the DSG Golf R at CCC and took it to the twisties down to Akuna Bay area, the thing was trying to change gears on me when I was using the throttle to get through the corners cleanly. I didn't feel I had the connection to the car like with a manual as a result (why did it keep trying to override my flappy paddle selections?)
My WRX is manual also, and probably about double the left foot power required to press the clutch, so the Golf R in manual really isn't an issue in traffic (the only thing that is a bit more tiring than the rexxy is the gear ratios in the golf are a lot closer so doing a LOT more gear changes. But I have found now that I can be pottering along slowly in 3rd, and don't have to pull 2nd gear to get good acceleration! The wide range of torque in the golf R means I don't have to pull 1st or 2nd gears too often when slowing down in traffic).
Possibly because, even in manual mode, foot on the floor makes it kick down? In my DSG I can feel the resistance point at "full throttle", and it holds whatever gear it's in - pushing the pedal further makes it kick down.Quote:

I deliberated a long time and got a DSG for no other reason than resale value (the dealer told me he was selling 10:1, which seems at odds with the voting here). Am scared by the 5 year service costs though...

Really though it is the price of progress and German engineering.. if you want a slush box then don't buy a DSG. Bit like buying 19" rims then being pissed that to replace them costs as musch as a new small car..
10 to 1 sounds about right to me, although I'd never believe what a car salesman told me. Especially when it relates to spending more money with them.
The resale value thing is a moot point as far as I can tell. I wanted a manual and although there were more DSG's available, I had less to chose from so the sale was easy for the seller.
The majority of VW's I see on the road from day to day, are DSG. It's easy to tell in stop start traffic.
DSG this time because everyone seems obsessed with 0-100 times :)
