I am with the others, if you like the R get it now, though I sense you are moving around on choice
My MX5 was a 2001 model. $40,000 gets me much more today than 12 years ago. Imagine the mk4 gti vs mk6, entirely different car for similar money!

I popped down to my regular dealer and after a big negotiation I traded in the 86 for a white '13 MY13 R with satnav and rearcam.
Not my choice of options tbh (I'd go with black wheels and ACC if any, but neither are on cars in stock anywhere) but they got me a cracker deal! Both those things are things I'd appreciate as I use it anyway.
1.5% finance and a few grand off the list price isn't bad at all! The finance itself is around $8-9k in savings if my calculations are right.

I was highly considering holding on for the next R but that's at least a year away and won't get the same kind of deal unless I wait a further 1-2 years.

Thanks all for your help and suggestions

Can get well used ones for 10k.

However xr5 turbo's are still pretty expensive.
Well no not really. The average price for a good condition 2008 MK5 GTI with average km is about $25k, some more, some less. 2008 XR5 is similar, maybe a pinch less. But look at Holden Astra SRi Turbo, Anything French, anything Italian, anything Japanese, or compare it to a 2.0l TFSI Audi A3, which would have cost at least $10k more than the GTI but is selling for similar or less money second hand despite having pretty much the same mechanicals and arguably better quality finish.

Hmm dunno if I agree with that..

The cheapest mkv gti on carsales is 14.5k and its a 2005 that has 200k, I've never seen a mkv gti fetch 10k, it must of either been a repairable write off or the worlds most desperate seller..

The cheapest xr5 turbo is 13.5k and is a 2007 with 125k. I have seem drop down to the 11's.

Considering the mkv gti is now approaching 8 yr's on I think the resale is above average, just look at the mkv jetta turbo which has the same engine as the gti and was the same price new, fully optioned up they are going for as low as 11k on the used car market now..

There are 65+ new Golf R DSGs on Carsales... it would suggest they aren't walking out the showroom doors anymore.

There's one with 125 thousand Km's at a local dealer. For 12k right now. Fully optioned. Face facts. They are cheap for a second generation car, that is top of the line. Mk7 yet to be on sale.

Xr5's, yes are a ford. But equally as same of a car if not more. For more dollars. Euro cars depreciate more than any other vehicle this is a statistical fact.

As someone mentioned earlier. Golf r's with 30,xxx are expecting 'pov pack' new money.

****s need to wake up and smell the cheese.

Wish they had the damn 1.5% finance when I was in the market! Would have bought an R instead of a GTI

Well if it's a statistical fact, why don't you reference some statistics and facts, rather than one car you saw at a local car yard.

Look at the depreciation of a Falcon or Commodore for a start, and see how your "facts" and "statistics" stack up.

They are a local mass produced vehicle.

Same goes with BMW etc back in Europe.

There are possibly 65 Plus advertisements, doesn't necessarily mean there are that many cars waiting to be sold, how many have "Picture may not be the same as car for sale"? anyway I would agree they are not walking out the door because after 3 years of being on sale the demand spike will have receded.
