Wimmer RS tunes the Golf R to 478HP

Wimmer RS Golf R Red Devil V
posted on: Sep 27, 2010 on category: Golf

Wimmer RS has unveiled the RED DEVIL V-Project, a tuning package for the Golf R that produces 478 HP and 610Nm.

In stock form, the all-wheel drive Golf R rolls out of VW's factory with a 2.0-liter TFSI producing 270-hp and 350Nm / 258 lbs-ft of maximum torque. The German tuning firm 'Wimmer RS' claim that once Wimmer RS's engineers perform all their modifications, those numbers increase to a staggering 478-hp and 610Nm or 450 lbs-ft.

The extra power comes from a variety of modifications including engine ECU tuning, changes to the turbocharger, the piping and injectors, crank shaft, and the connecting rods. Wimmer modify the cylinder head, install a larger intercooler, air intake system, handmade high-grade steel sports exhaust system in 84 mm diameter with 100 cell sports catalyst converter.

According to the Wimmer, the upgraded Golf R can reach an electronically limited top speed of 291 km/h or 181 mph.

Modifications to the handling include a coil spring set and helical spring set which lowers the ride height. A high performance brake system is also available as an option.

The Wimmer has not released information on pricing for the stage V tuning kit.
No local suport though and it would cost you an arma nd a leg but it's fun to see a small 4cyl hatch put out power levels of a V8.

Lol... lets skip stage 4 and go straight to stage 5!
Permanent non-reversible modifications of the engine FTW!

Must be some old engine pictures used, it still runs the standard MAF housing & piping down to the turbo with the stock cross section it can only pull enough air for ~ 360 hp.

Would love to see an R hit 291kmph though! The Aero would be "interesting" at that speed - because it becomes very interesting @ ~ 250 - bring on the video!

I was about to say, that's one mighty stock-lookin' engine bay (aside from the K&N filter). In fact, the whole car looks stock as a rock. Maybe the tuning company bought their R and took the happy snaps before they made any modifications.

I'd say this one would have to be a manual-only proposition with 356kw and 610Nm. You'd be wanting to swap out the stock clutch pretty soon too.

Perhaps we're underestimating the kW potential of the K&N sticker?

If they can do 478hp whilst maintaining this stock appearance, that would make for a wicked sleeper!!

Maybe, maybe not. There have been "650NM+ Kits" for the 6sp Wet Clutch DSG for at least 3 years (in Europe) for "Big Turbo R32 Conversions". The other thing is that the new Audi 550NM 7sp DSG which is being used in the Tiguan and Transporter is also now being fitted to the Audi TT-RS. If its being fitted to that range of vehicles, surely it could also be fitted to the R

I'm sure the full kit includes a stick on scoop for the bonnet too
