VW told me a fully synthetic Castrol 5W-30 which is specifically for VW and it is advised to get it at a dealer but I can't help thinking this is just to try and make an extra buck. They quoted me 1 litre for $29.04. Grateful for any input, I'm in Sydney.
Any VW dealer should do a free top up service (oil, water etc). No booking needed - just rock up. I also bought the $30 Castrol top up bottle from the dealer as when I called in for a top up on a Saturday the service dept was flat out. The service guy told me to keep the bottle and get it refilled when empty. So it's $30 than you only have to pay once. As it runs low, I hit the dealer for a top up and ask them to also refill my 1 litre bottle. No charge.

That's interesting millo. I notice you're in Vic, so not sure how it would ne in Sydney. I'll give it a go.

On the topic of the exact oil, is it the 5W-30 that they told me, just in case I can't get to a dealer and need to buy it in a shop?

You need to use a 504/507 VW approved oil on your mark 6. Because these engines are direct injection, they tend to soot up the intake. These oils meet certain standards set by vw to try and eliminate/prevent this.

Buy the stuff from the dealer, you know it's right and it's "castrol professional" - it's different to the stuff at the autoshops, VW import it themselves as a spare part. If you don't like that, there is oils from liqui-moly (spelling) and also penrite that are approved as well. Both sold at super-crap and autobarn etc.

Do a search - oils has been done to death here and other VW forums

Forgot to add - someone correct me if I am wrong, but that's what I've learned after trolling through various forums and harassing my service manager and other VW owners...

You can get an approved oil at places like Autobarn. Look on the label for the VW 504/507 Approved. That is the important part. The viscosity will be 5W30 and the price will be high

Thanks to all for their input. Not being a huge car enthusiast (I had my last car 8 years and never opened the bonnet once!), I might just err on the side of caution and take it to VW in the next couple of days. The dipstick says its half full and the service guy said it will need half a litre so I'll make sure they're wearing protection before they rape me $29 for half a litre!!

I bought shell helix 504 from supercheap during the boxing day sale - 5L for $66. Used this for the service recently. As it is 504 VW grade, warranty can't be void (VW dealer did it anyway without issue) as I refuse to pay more than double for the same oil.

My check oil light came on last Thursday night. Came home, read these forums. Next morning called Denlo at Parramatta as I was passing there later in the day. The said no worries - come over and get a free top up. As it turns out I was delayed (at a funeral...) so just popped into Supercheap and got the Penrite 5W-30 VW 507 for $79 for 5 litres and topped it up myself.

I did call Camden GTI as well that morning to make sure which oil I could use and they nominated the Penrite from Supercheap and were spot on with the price too.
