As a newbie I have put a deposit on a 2011 GTI Candy, BT, MDI, rear P/sensor, DSG in VIC.
Q: Why is it that these high end machines get the older 6 speed DSG gear box? Cheers. S

I'm sure there will be more information but from reading stuff on here and talking to my dealer its 'cause the 7-speed DSG can't handle over 300nm of torque. Even the 103TDI has the 6-speed and that's producing 330nm.

Oh and congrats on the deposit mate![]()
Might want to check up on some new facts there guys .....
The new 550NM 7-speed DSG is now available in Multivans and Tiguans.
With 2.0 TSI (GTI) & TDI engines, FWD and AWD .... so no real reason except cost cutting from VW.
Any dealer telling you different does not know what he is talking about ....

Lets not confuse the issue Skarkie.
The MK6 Golf was out before VW had the 550NM 7 speed DSG. Who knows what modifications may needed to put that gearbox in the Golf.
I believe that stucam's question was specifc to why the 7sp DSG in the lower model Golf's is not in the upper model Golf's, and that's because the 7sp DSG used in the Golf (and Polo) range is a smaller/cheaper dry clutch version which has a lower torque handling rating.
That'd make sense, but what is the big deal anyway. In D it just means another gear to get to as quick as possible before reaching 50km/h!
Your GTI will be much more fun in sport mode, which whether 6 or 7 speed, will only use the first 4 gears until you get near 100km/h![]()
The 550NM 7 speed DSG that Sharkie talks of is what is being used in the new Audi RS5 and RS3 etc too. Having a higher torque rating as standard probably means you'd be good to 700 to 800Nm from the thing... I mean, even the Golf R Stage III torque rating of 515Nm is within the stock capability of that gearbox without requiring DSG reflashes or clutch packs. It also allows LC at up to 6500rpm (from what I've been told).
So it would be a cool gearbox to have... but can't see it happening in the Golf until the MK7.
It's good that the Tiguan has it though![]()
Well the new 550NM 7-speed DSG is reasonably new and probably after they've developed the GTI,R and TDI. So I reckon that it would cost a lot to re-engineer it.

heh.. you think the gear changes are short with a 6 speed.. my gawd the 7 speed would be a right pain
