Where is the compass unit in a four door?

    Hi all

I'm buying a RNS510 nav unit to upgrade the RCD310 that my car came with.

To do this, I apparently need to not only 'uncode' the compass functionality, but also to disconnect the unit entirely.

I haven't found any info as to where this resides on a four door MkVI...can some kind person let me know please?

    Many thanks.

Do you have a compass showing on your MFD? The answer is no you don't because only USA Mark V's have a compass module built in.

I've never understood why americans rely on a compass for driving around and giving directions. I drove over there in the pre-GPS days as well, and whilst in Australia we'd say "head towards Wollongong on the Princes Hwy", the americans would say it "head south on the Princes Hwy".

I personally like the American way. Trying to give an Australian directions who doesn't have a basic understanding of the area they're in or which direction they're facing is frustrating. If you could at least tell them to head north for 15 km, it'd be much easier

No, but I assumed that was just because I hadn't enabled it through the highline computer. Thanks anyway, question answered.

x 2 it would make our drivers smarter if they had to think more often. Most American cars have a compass built in somewhere, Subaru had it in the mirror (many do it this was as it's cheap to fit for their market) whereas VW did it the better way and built a module in that displays on the MFD.

    + 1...

I was showing a new work colleague a design of mine (to give her an idea before tackling something similar for herself).. On the drawing appeared terms like "north-east" and "south-west"... She questioned the need for this - "Why don't you just say left or right instead?"...

I had to explain it to her... She has an engineering degree too...

    I dunno..

    Regards,
    - Anthony.
