For my mk6 gti, going K04 was the icing on the cake. To get all that performance from a stock engine is unreal. Does highlight the need for better suspension, better brakes and grippier tyres lol. Also, a decent exhaust is a must so it doesn't sound like a Camry

The turbo.
I found the changed downpipe gave a slight increase in growl which was good for me - and the changed tips made the rear look more aggressive. But I get why some want the full exhaust sound.
I grew up on a diet of V8s so a louder Golf was never going to do it for me. :)

Stage 1 is a cheap upgrade for power and is awesome and all...
But for me I'm going to say the Diesel Geek Short Shifter. If I was to replace my car tomorrow I would have already ordered a new one. They really are that good, if you have a manual transmission, buy one.... buy one now. thank me later.
An honorable mention also has to go to the sill protectors and little trim insert bit that goes onto the seat height lever thingy (which I don't seem to have photos of). These are usually eBay specials, simple stick on parts, but they really do just finish the car off and make me smile when I see them.
In my case the hard part was that the Cabriolet is a two door car, but for a long time the only two door versions of the sill protectors were for the GTI or R... eventually there was one released that just said "Golf".

^ funny you mention the Diesel Geek shifter - as i hated mine when i had it in my Golf R. Removed it, sold it and purchased the 42DD solid shifter bushings instead which i am happy with. I've always wanted to try another short shifter (like HPA etc) but have never done it.
Best aesthetic mods:
- Golf R tail lights (surprised no one else has said this already)
- Different rims
- Lowering
- New exhaust (makes the cars rear end look so much better plus the added noise of course)
Best performance mods:
- Tune
- Intake
- Exhaust (plus down pipe)

The R tails mod on the Mk6 definitely gives the car an edge and stands out - again another thing I preferred on the Mk6 (although I never did get around to changing them) than the tails they put on the Mk7 R. They look good until lit up, then they look cheap and nasty - IMO I'll stress.
For my 118 TSI, aside from the stage 1 tune, which is an easy pick, i'd really have to say the Whiteline Sway bars and the upgrade to a Golf R intercooler. The sways really keep the car flat as a pancake through bends despite needing some grease every second service and the intercooler is just awesome, especially here in the hot weather. It now feels much more aggressive up past 4,000 RPM.
Runners up are:
- pulling the supercharger acoustic insulation off and slapping a CAI on really helps that little unit scream like a banshee.
- VWR sport springs, which really did keep that nice comfortable ride while dropping the car about an inch.
