Also in response to the earlier comments, I do buy new cars every 2-3 years and yes, its bloody expensive to do so. Sounds like your onto a good thing backdoc.
yeah it seems to work well. Some people have more money than sense, not you of course

Depends how important having a new car is. I've done it once and I'm about to do it next week again so getting excited after a 4.5 month wait.

2 of my patients have already paid deposits for the R at Barloworld. They've been told mid year deliveries. Both have specified the blue. I reckon the CW would look the biz with black mirrors and with black wheels. That'll be my order once I have a drive.

I just told the wife I'm buying one. She just gave me a long blank stare before shaking her head in silence. Too funny.

lol @ backdoc's wife, too funny!

The R looks great, I might pick one up in 3 years time in place of the GTI.

Yeah, I'd be happy with Blue or CW. Blue would be the one, same as with the R32's.

You be nice to them, suck up to them and remind them how easy it will be to re-use your build spot, or if the car is already made, how easy it will be for them to sell the car. Might help if you can find them a buyer too.

hmm, just sounds like a really dodgy thing to do - the deal is done so to speak. I guess with a hot ticket item such as the GTI - especially one that was bargained on - they might be happy to have something coming soon that they can sit tight on and not budge too much on price "but itll be here in 2 months not 6". Either way, as I said before.. not really sure if a bog stock S3 @ $62-65k is as attractive to me over a new R with a few options at similar money. If anything this exercise has made me look at the second hand market though - certainly some incredible 1-2yo S3's to pickup for well under their original sale price.

It's not ideal but I wouldnt worry about it too much, they would easily be able to sell it given the demand and wait etc. I've managed to get a few deposits back over the years but would be easier for you to change your mind if you were still buying something from VW (Ie upgrading to the R).

Although you'd probably kick yourself if you didn't wait till the R came out to make a fair decision (at which time people would be lining up for them or going back to consider the S3.

Another thing i thought of was the headroom in the S3 wouldn't be as good in the Golf (if it's anything like the old models)?

Not planning on taking my deposit back. I've only been looking at S3's for a comparison.

The R is the only change I may make. All power and performance of the TT-S for a lot less coin.

Well, as has been discussed elsewhere, where is that power? TT-S's seem to have been short-changed, relative to the facelift S3
