Yep, the stock downpipe on the Golf positions the restrictive catalytic converter right at the turbo exhaust. The aftermarket downpipes not only use a "high flow" or "motorsports" cat, but they move it underneath the car so that it is not smack bang against the turbo. So there is simply a HUGE change in the air flow through the exhaust once you get a competent downpipe installed.

UNFORTUNATELY, the Golf R has that exhaust flap which is meant to make the stock (boring Golf R) more "exciting" when you put your foot down by making a bit more noise etc. In combination with the increase in air flow from the downpipe, yeah, you are going to be LOUD at high rpms and WOT. You've probably also noticed that it's significantly louder on a cold start, until the idle revs drop (~1 minute in Sydney climate).

Whilst I would prefer it not be so loud, there is no way I'd own a Golf R without Stage 2+
Maybe someone will eventually make an aftermarket cat-back which reduces the volume back to non-flap-stock levels or something....

    Can the pipes be wrapped?

Of course anything added to muffle the sound will restrict flow and therefore defeat the purpose I suppose?

Yeah it makes quite a difference in power output. Couldn't go back to stage 1 now.

I don't know if I'm more jealous of your car or the nearby track with regular (relatively) cheap open days.

    Do you mean the DP?
The increase of noise doesn't emanate from the DP, it's the "rear silencer/muffler" design, and (at least in my opinion) the fact it has the flappy valve. Changing the DP only on a GTI doesn't make anywhere near the same volume increase...

i would think a catback exhaust would be the main issue with noise problems. ive found the apr dp has increased the noise, but only marginally and its not offensive at all. this is one reason why i no longer bother with catbacks, too much noise, the dp although "louder" isnt what i would consider unlivable

As I said... it's not an issue on the GTI, only on the R, and it's due to the exhaust flap in the rear muffler, which is again, only on the R

    Food for thought.
    Thanks guys.
Was driving back from a mates house last night, air was cold and dry, geesus it performs well in these conditions.
I honestly can't imagine having more "usable" power.

Hey guys, I'm thinking of getting the RNS510 Navigation system for my car from ebay. My car is specified with Dynaudio.

Question is, if I replace the stock RCD510 with the RNS, will Dynaudio still be compatible?

Also, will the navigation direction be displayed on the MFD like the factory fitted system?

As long as you have (access to) VCDS to change coding you'll be fine.
